PAGE 2 Q u a r t e r l y W A H F F L Y E R n e w s l e t t e r o f t h e President’s Message… By Keith Glasshof Keith Glasshof To raise funds for our Scholarship Program, we need your help! Our first-ever Silent Auction will take place from 5 - 6 p.m. You’ll have just one hour to look over the items and place your bids. All bidding closes at 6:00. Winning bids will be announced shortly after 6:00. Payment should be made before the banquet begins at 7:00. The Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame premiere annual event is close at hand. On October 25th the WAHF will conduct its annual recognition dinner. It is at this extraordinary event that the WAHF recognizes aviation pioneers. The men and women inducted into the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame are those with a Wisconsin connection who have made a significant contribution to aviation - a contribution that has impacted the course of aviation. To date, the organization has recognized 56 such pioneers – 56 men and women who have had a significant impact on the course of aviation. Among the inductees are well known aviation personalities such as Billy Mitchell, war hero and air power visionary; Steve Wittman, “arguably the world’s greatest air racer;” Richard Bong, America’s air combat ace of aces; and Paul Poberezny, founder of the Experimental Aircraft Association. The event will be held at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. It is a pleasant evening and the opportunity to tour the EAA Museum is, by itself, worth the price of admission. It was approximately 17 years ago that a group of historically minded aviators and educators recognized the importance of recording the development of aviation in Wisconsin by organizing the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame. They set as a goal for the organization: Collect and preserve the history of aviation in Wisconsin, recognize those who made that history, inform others of it, and promote aviation education for future generations. In addition to the induction of aviation pioneers, there are other activities for which the WAHF is well recognized. One such activity is the recording of the development of aviation in Wisconsin. That book, Forward in Flight – The History of Aviation in Wisconsin, best exemplifies that effort. Published in 1998, the book sets forth the development of aviation our state. It is a very thorough and very professional documentary of the key events that have shaped Wisconsin’s contributions to aviation. It is informative, yet entertaining. Another well recognized activity is the annual awarding of scholarships. Each year the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame awards a scholarship to an outstanding student enrolled in an aviation related program at a Wisconsin college or university. In order to raise funds for our scholarship program, a Silent Auction will take place at this event. We urge you to bid generously. Today and into the future, aviation history will continue to be made. Aviators will continue to explore new frontiers. Inductees such as Deke Slayton and James Lovell are evidence. So long as there is another horizon, another challenge, another opportunity, mankind will continue to expand the envelope of aviation. On October 25th the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame will recognize the 2003 class of inductees. It will be an action-packed evening with a variety of activities. We encourage you join us at the EAA AirVenture Museum to celebrate the contributions to aviation made by the current class of inductees. It will be a memorable evening. Why is this banquet so special? As Keith mentioned in his message, the 2003 Induction Banquet will be an extra special event, one we think you won’t want to miss! Planning for the 2003 banquet began back in January when the excitement of the 100th Anniversary of Flight was just beginning to build. WAHF board members immediately set a goal of making the 2003 event one of the most memorable in its history. What makes this year’s event special? Let’s start by telling you that several of our past inductees, several of our state’s aviation stars, will be in attendance. It’s your chance to shake their hands and congratulate them for their achievements and for making a difference in an activity that means a lot to you. You’ll also have the chance to honor and meet the 2003 class of inductees. Who knows whom you’ll be seated next to at dinner? Want to go home with something new and at the same time help our future aviation leaders? Our Silent Auction is a fun way to help! We hope to raise over $2000 for the Carl Guell Scholarship program. Several businesses have donated valuable items that you’ll enjoy bidding on with your friends, as listed on pg. 3.
